Fueling up

The girls and I have been working extra hard in the gym. The heat and humidity is a killer, but our regulars (you know who you are) are giving it all they got! Two things that concerns me in this heat especially are hydration and calorie intake. Most of us are here to lose fat so we think we need to keep our calorie intake down. What happens though is that your body runs out of fuel during our intense workouts. When the body runs out of fuel, you might as well go home, rather than deplete yourself further by pushing it. Eating sensibly and often through the day before coming to class is vital for you to get an effective workout.

Hydrating is also crucial! I know we get busy and forget to drink enough water, but if you constantly have to stop to get another sip of water, you’re interrupting your workout time. In this heat, it’s a good idea to drink lots of water throughout the entire day. I even drink a lot at night before I know I’m going to have an especially intense day working out and/or running. It may be a pain to wake up for bathroom breaks throughout the night, but I tend to perform much better and get less fatigued the next day.

A product that works really well for me is called Accelerade. I get it at Gotbody.com and it’s the the best sports drink I’ve found. It extends endurance, speeds muscle recovery and enhances rehydration with a 4:1 carb/protein formula. Unlike ALL of the protein powders I’ve used, it doesn’t sit heavy in my stomach. I can drink it before, during and after a workout. Maybe it’s psychological, but I feel a little extra boost that carries me through my workout and my muscle definitely thank me in the morning.

I don’t mean to sound like an ad for them, but I wanted to explain why this works so well for me personally since many of the girls in class have asked for advice on what to drink.
